Psoriasis is a chronic, probably autoimmune, skin condition that is found in about 1 percent of the population. Heredity is one important factor; children of an affected parent have a one in four chance of developing the condition. Psoriasis may appear for the first time soon after a streptococcal throat infection. The condition usually occurs in persons between the ages of 10 and 25 and, although it may disappear for short periods of time, long periods of remission are rare.
Symptoms A typical lesion of psoriasis is an oval, slightly raised area covered with dry, silvery scales overlying a red area of skin. The size, extent, and distribution of the lesions vary considerably. They may be scattered all over the body, including the scalp, or there may be only one or two rather large lesions. Some drugs, such as chloroquine, aggravate the condition. The lesions can join together into extensive areas of scaling skin. Lesions on the scalp do not affect hair growth, and it is unusual for the lesions to cause more than the mildest symptoms.
The condition is often improved by sunlight, and it is noticeable that psoriasis is more common in temperate regions than tropics.
Complications In about a quarter of the patients, the fingernails become pitted, ridged, or discolored. The nails may also break much more easily. A form of arthritis sometimes occurs in patients. Any joint may be affected, but commonly it is those of the fingers and lower spine. This produces a condition similar to a mild form of rheumatoid arthritis. |
