Arthritis occurs in pets, just as in people.  It is characterized by pain, swelling, and limited movement. Arthritis may be caused by inflammation or infection in a joint, by degeneration of a joint as an animal becomes older, or by a disorder of which arthritis is a symptom.

"About two years ago Mickey [our 5 year old Tibetan Terrier] had an occasional limp. As time went on, his limp progressed, finally getting to the point that Mickey had trouble getting up from a lying-down position. He also could not run. His vet diagnosed him with arthritis. This is quite unusual because arthritis does not typically run in his breed. There is no "cure" for arthritis, so at the time our only option was to send him to the UW-Vet hospital for some experimental surgery which was not only expensive, but predicted a less than 1% chance of helping Mickey.
