Cold sore, or fever blister, is a small blister that appears, becomes an ulcer, and then heals with a scab. Cold sores usually occur around the lips and nose, but they are also common in the genital region and tend to recur.
Causes
Cold sores, known medically as herpes simplex, are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1), or, rarely, by type 2 (HSV2). This virus is present in many people and causes cold sores in health or when another infection, such as the common cold, occurs. Sometimes, stress or exposure to wind, sunlight, certain foods, or drugs can cause cold sores. In some women, cold sores may appear with the menstrual period. |
