Boil, also called furuncle, is an infection of the hair roots or sweat glands caused by the staphylococcus bacteria. Boils commonly occur in the armpit, on the back of the neck, in the groin, or on the buttocks, but can also appear elsewhere. A red, painful lump forms, gradually grows bigger, and then breaks down to form pus in the center. The pus normally discharges spontaneously. If a boil does not heal within two weeks or if a series of boils develops, one should seek medical attention. It is possible that some underlying disease is allowing the boils to recur. |
